Red Ribbon Week at MASH!

Red Ribbon Week at MASH!

Sydney Wilson, Staff Writer

Red Ribbon Week is a week celebrated by schools all across The United States. During the week students take a pledge to stay drug-free and participate in fun activities. “Red Ribbon Week started after the death of Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who in 1985 was brutally murdered by drug traffickers he was investigating in Mexico. After his death, people started wearing red ribbons to honor Kiki’s sacrifice. Today, millions of people celebrate Red Ribbon Week by wearing red ribbons, participating in community anti-drug events, and pledging to live drug-free lives.” – justthinktwice.gov

Miss Brown’s journalism class created banners, handouts, and decorated her door in honor of the week. In total there were 800 red ribbon week handouts containing various themed objects such as pencils, bracelets, stickers, and tattoos. Our school has special days for students to dress up according to the drug-free prompts. This year’s prompts were: Lei off drugs, Team up against drugs, Tune out drugs, and Don’t get wrapped up in drugs.
